Phil Gordon is a very successful tournament poker player, but he is likely more well known in the poker world for his televised poker commentating and various poker books and his instructional DVD. Phil has almost $2,000,000 in career tournament winnings and no WSOP bracelets.
Both of these amounts are far less than the other members of Team Full Tilt so this must mean that Gordon achieved his poker fame through other means. Gordon was the poker commentator on the successful Celebrity Poker Showdown television series for two years and he also commentated the final table of the ’06 and ’07 WSOP main events. He has also written three successful poker books and has released an instructional DVD about final table poker.
Phil grew up playing five card draw with his aunt and sister in Texas and this family fun would end up fuelling Phil’s love for the game of poker and allow him to find success. Phil was a very smart kid. He graduated from the Georgia Institute of Technology with a computer science degree at the tender age of 20. He then quickly became the first employee of Netsys Technologies Incorporated and did his part to turn the company into a huge corporation. Three years after he began working for Netsys the company was sold to Cisco Systems for $95,000,000. Phil received a cut of this amount and proceeded to travel around the world with his new found wealth.
Phil had some crazy adventures on his travels including tracking gorillas in Uganda, rafting along the Amazon River and judging a bikini contest in Australia. Phil made a splash in the poker world shortly after his return. At the ’01 WSOP Phil Gordon finished fourth in the main event and took home $400K for his efforts. His only big tournament win came three years later at the 2004 Bay101 Shooting Stars Invitational.
Phil has found success in many different poker fields. He can now be found online at Full Tilt Poker playing in the big buy-in tournaments from time to time.
